Endometriosis affects 1 in 9 women worldwide (Endometriosis Australia).

Some of the symptoms are:

Pelvic pain, especially around the menstrual cycle (including before or after)

Pain during sex

Abdominal, back or pelvic pain

Heavy or irregular bleeding

Bleeding longer than normal

Changes in bowel habits

Changes in urination habits

Bloating

Tiredness or low energy, especially around your period

New evidence is emerging around nutrition and dietary management that can help with symptoms and even slow down the disease. The aim is to incorporate anti-inflammatory foods into our daily eating habits.

Fibre

Fibre is found in plant-based sources, such as wholegrains, fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds. Fibre can lower blood insulin level production which in turn can lower the oestrogen levels in our body. In addition, it helps with oestrogen excretion by preventing absorption.

Fruit and Vegetables

Besides the fact that they are high in fibre, they are also rich in antioxidants which help reduce the oxidative stress in our body caused by free radicals. However, it is very important that they are washed well using baking soda as it can remove the pesticides from the skin. The other option is to buy organic fruit and vegetables if affordable. The reason for this is that research has shown a link between pesticides and dioxins with endometriosis and its symptoms.

The recommendation is to daily consume 5-7 portions of fruit and vegetables (1 portion = 80gr). A study showed that women who consumed 13 or more servings of green vegetables a week had 70% lower risk of endometriosis compared to those who consumed less than 6. A similar percentage reduction risk is seen with 14 servings of fruit consumption per week compared to <6 per week.

Fats

Omega-3 fats, such as oily fish, flaxseeds, hemp and chia seeds, walnuts, pecans, soya beans and soya products, like tofu, have anti-inflammatory properties. As a result, they can help fight the inflammation associated with endometriosis.

On the other hand, trans fats, which are commonly found in cakes, biscuits, pastries, should be reduced as they contribute to this inflammation. The same applies for red meat, as it is high in saturated fat.

Red meat

Red meat includes beef, pork, lamb, veal and goat. The Papazzini et al., 2004 study showed that women who ate at least 7 servings of red meat per week had twice the risk of endometriosis compared with those who ate fewer than 3 servings of red meat per week. Another study of 82,000 pre-menopausal women where their diets were assessed (Yamamoto et at., 2018) also supports similar findings. Women who consumed more than 2 servings of red meat per day had 56% higher risk for endometriosis compared to the women who consumed 1 serving per week. Processed red meat consumption also showed an increased risk.

Alcohol

Avoidance of alcohol is recommended as some evidence suggests that greater alcohol intake may be associated with increased risk of endometriosis through possibly increasing oxidative stress and oestrogen levels.

In summary, it is very important to follow a low-fat diet, which is high in plant-based foods, to increase fibre consumption and lower total and saturated fat, as well as cholesterol levels. As a result, women are likely to decrease their body fat percentage which can also decrease oestrogen concentration in our body, since body fat (adipose tissue) converts androgen into oestrogens, thus overall decreasing the risk of endometriosis.

References

Endometriosis Australia, accessed January 2025 https://www.endometriosisaustralia.org/post/is-there-a-universal-diet-for-endometriosis

Nutrition Guide for Clinicians, accessed January 2025<https://nutritionguide.pcrm.org/nutritionguide/view/Nutrition_Guide_for_Clinicians/1342065/all/Endometriosis>

Omega-3 fats, Heart UK, accessed January 2025 < https://www.heartuk.org.uk/low-cholesterol-foods/omega-3-fats>

Parazzini F, Chiaffarino F, Surace M, et al.
